Priceless Egyptian Statue Stolen from Greenville Art Show.
As reported by the Greenville Times-Herald
Last Tuesday, at some time between 10pm and 6am, the largest art heist in South Carolina history occured. An ancient golden statue of the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek was stolen from a heavily guarded art exhibit in downtown Greenville. Matt Harper, one of the off-duty policemen hired to protect the exhibit, stated "At no point in time during the night did I observe anything out of the ordinary, until I saw that the big gold gator was missing."
According to authorities with close knowledge of the ongoing case, at least 4 off-duty police officers were watching the building at the time of the theft. Video surveillance footage is being reviewed, but our sources have said that initial viewings "provided little in the way of usable intelligence." Further requests were met with a string of "No comment" reponses, and messages left with official contacts at the Greenville Police Department have not been returned at the time of this story.
Considered a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art, the statue is of a crocodile, slightly over two feet long, with incredibly intricate detail and craftsmanship. Estimated to be over four thousand years old, this statue has never been publicly shown prior to this exhibit. A reward of $500,000 has been offered for the statue, with no questions asked.
